What is Geometry? Trends Of Teaching Geometry In Different Countries

As a student of mathematics and science, I found geometry among one of my favorite subject since the very start. In the long run with geometry from a small age to the high school completion I managed to get a great deal on knowledge not only on what "Geometry" meant but also the trends in which geometry was taught in various times in various places. So today I present to you my summarized research on geometry and its trends of being taught.

An application of geometry
Let's begin from the very start.

Introduction to geometry:

Geometry means measurement of the earth. It is a branch of mathematics which studies the properties of shapes. Geometric concepts were developed from the beginning of the civilization. The importance and essentiality of geometry was felt with the development and utility of geometrical concepts. Geometry has not been developed at once. It has been in an evolution phase since the start and it's still the case at present. So its teaching and learning must be reformed in order.

Why to study/teach Geometry in School:
Geometry should be taught in school because;
  • It is key to mathematical thinking.
  • It develops the ability to draw accurate plans.
  • It enables the students to acquire a mass of geometrical facts.
ICMI (International Mathematical Union) feels an urgent need for an international study, whose main aims should be focused as;
  • To discuss the goals of the teaching of geometry at different school levels and according to different cultural traditions and environment.
  • To identify important challenges and emerging trends for the future and to analyze their potential didactical impact.
  • To exploit and implement new teaching methods.
REFORMS IN INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOL GEOMETRY:
  • Reforms in Instructional objectives of school geometry.
  • Reforms in instructional content of school geometry.
  • Reforms in instructional teaching methods in school geometry.

TRENDS OF TEACHING GEOMETRY IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES:

Teaching geometry in a school is very important. Here I have enlisted some reasons for it as to, why to teach geometry in school?
  • To fulfill daily needs of a child.
  • To fulfill the developmental needs of the child.
  • To achieve the subject wise goal.
  • To achieve the goal of teaching process.
  • To preserve the culture.
What is the purpose of teaching Geometry in school?
  • It enables the learners to acquire a mass of geometrical facts.
  • The geometrical principles of equality, symmetry and similarity are implanted in the very nature of things.
  • It is important in a person’s cultural development.
  • It develops the ability to draw accurate plans.
  • It provides a content that is objective and non- controversial.
  • It is useful in engineering, machine-shop, construction industries, landscape architecture, interior decoration and other areas of appreciation.
  • It demonstrates the nature and power of pure reason.
  • It is the key to mathematical thinking.
So, now we have known thoroughly the meaning of geometry and it's uses and purposes. Let's go the trends of teaching geometry at various popular countries including Nepal;

Trends in Teaching Geometry in U.S.A;
  • More use of space and 3D.
  • Following the process of piglet.
  • Change in study of line and translation.
  • More focus on study of plane and solid.
  • Study of Rigid body.
Trends in Teaching Geometry in France;
  • Giving information of R, xy-plane and xyz plane (11-13 years)
  • To see the development of geometry through the use of Real number 0.
  • Introduction to metric space.
  • Axiomatic approach.
Trends in Teaching Geometry in Australia;
  • Transformation Geometry, Co-ordinate geometry and vector geometry are taught in secondary level.
  • More effects of micro-computer on teaching statistics and Geometry.
  • Teaching geometry through the use of computer.
  • Giving emphasis more on intensity method rather than axiomatic approach.
Trends in Teaching Geometry in Nepal;
  • Teaching starts from definition, axioms.
  • Teaching geometry through old concepts.
  • Some Government and private school teach geometry meaningfully.
  • Nowadays, teaching to fulfill instructional purpose.
  • Basic concepts in primary level.
  • Integrating practical use in secondary level.
  • More emphasis on practical aspects.

So, friends that was all about Geometry. I will be writing more articles regarding mathematics in future so stay tuned.
